On the plus side, aquaculture operations can provide careers in coastal communities where people once depended on angling for their livelihoods. Researchers recommend growing and applying the One Health approach, an existing interdisciplinary model that brings individual together, animal, and environmental health services to handle issues linked to aquaculture.Byers and his Georgetown colleagues, Shahin Assefnia DVM, Siva Dakshanurthy PhD, and Jaime Guidry Auvil, PhD, have found that cadherin-11 is over-expressed in 15 % of breast cancers, and in many glioblastomas. He believes the molecule also plays a part in pancreatic cancer. ‘What many of these cancers all have in common is normally cadherin-11 and an unhealthy prognosis, without effective therapies,’ Byers says. ‘Cadherin-11 expression is necessary for tumors to grow. If it’s blocked, the cancers in cell collection studies and in animals stop growing – which is really quite striking just.’ The Georgetown team is rolling out a small molecule agent to turn off cadherin-11 in cancer, and, by screening medications now available, found that the well known arthritis drug Celebrex works in a similar way.
